Madison Mattioli

Professional Background

Madison received her Juris Doctor from the University of Montana School of Law in 2015. Since then, she has worked as a federal law clerk to the Hon. Brian Morris, for the Montana Attorney General’s Office, and for the United States Attorney’s Office. As an Assistant A.G., Madison handled dozens of appeals before the Montana Supreme Court, handled criminal cases from charging through sentencing, and defended the State of Montana through state agencies in civil litigation. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, she defended the United States through federal agencies in civil litigation, including personal injury and medical malpractice. Madison brings this varied experience with her to the Laird Cowley family law team. She enjoys working with a variety of clients, and prides herself on responsive and direct communication and creatively solving problems for her clients.

Madison graduated from the University of Montana with honors receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology (research emphasis) and a minor in human and family development. She started law school at the University of Montana School of Law in 2012 with two little girls in tow, two years old and four months old. She had her third daughter in between her second and third year of school before graduating in 2015. She completed her family with the addition of a little boy many years later.

Following law school, Madison clerked for United States District Court Judge Brian Morris in Great Falls. This clerkship provided her with a strong foundation in legal analysis, judicial decision-making, and courtroom practice. As an Assistant A.G., in addition to handling criminal appeals, Madison conducted annual appellate trainings for the state’s County Attorneys for several years. As an A.U.S.A., in addition to handling “regular” cases, Madison was lead litigation counsel on a conflict case out of Oakland, CA, that gained national attention. Her claim to fame after settling that case was that the then-U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland “hopped on a Zoom” to congratulate Madison for her excellent advocacy, a feat never before seen in the Montana offices. She earned the District of Montana’s Civil Advocate Award in 2025, largely in recognition of her work on this monster of a case.
